History

The Société Immobilière du Golf S.A. was incorporated on 27 November, 1934 when Her Royal Highness the Grand Duchess Charlotte contributed lands to the company that belonged to the Grand-Duchess' family. The Administration of the crown estates retained a significant part of the shares while the remaining shares were held by numerous shareholders.

His Royal Highness Prince Felix of Luxembourg, Messrs. Jerome Anders, Gaston Barbanson, Max Lambert, Albert Philippe, François Simon, Paul Simons, Georges Tesch and Camille Wolff were appointed to the Board of Directors. Mr. Henri Pouillat from Biarritz was appointed Director of the Golf.

Works on the course started at the beginning of 1935, based on the plans of Major J.C. Symonds covering an area of 52 hectares and were scheduled to be completed in June 1936. At the same time, construction works began on the clubhouse designed by the architect Weis with the official opening on 1 May, 1936.

But the first golf shots were played and lessons were taken as early as 1935.

On Saturday, 18 April, 1936, the Association Sportive Golf-Club Grand-Ducal was founded. With about 200 members it became tenant and operator of the infrastructures. In June 1935, HRH the Grand Duchess authorized the club to fly her colours, orange and blue.

The members of the Board of directors of the Association Sportive were:

- Honorary President : His Royal Highness Prince Felix of Luxembourg
- President: Max Lambert
- Vice-President: Léon Laval
- Secretary General: Camille Wolff

During the war period, and as early as February 1942, the Société Immobilière was dissolved by decree of the German occupier. This was followed by a period of inactivity and the Société immobilière would resume its activities only in October 1944, pursuant to the Grand-Ducal decree of 13 July, 1944. This period of inactivity, however, put the Association Sportive in a delicate situation. Nonetheless the shareholders encouraged the company to resume its activities and proceed to the necessary rehabilitation works. If the first 9 holes were spared during the war, the last 9 holes were damaged as they were used for manoeuvres of the Allied forces.

In 1946 an agreement was reached with the inter-allied mutual aid office to obtain compensation for the damage, and in 1948 the Golf-Club Grand-Ducal was again an 18-hole golf course in perfect condition.

In 1973, as the number of members increased, the extension of the clubhouse was decided. After a fire that destroyed an entire wing in 1986, reconstruction works gave it its current look and shape.

In 1994, 6 practice holes were added to the existing 18 holes.

Since 1937 the Golf-Club Grand-Ducal also headquarters the AEG (European Golf Association).
